The King of Sprint

When we are talking about the well-known Georgian athletes recollecting their impressive victories at the international arenas we always remember Omar Pkhakadze one of the best athletes xx century outstanding cycler, the world champion, silver and bronze medalist, 3rd prize winner of the Munich Olympic Games, twice world record holder and 10-fold winner of the former-USSR championships; And it is not the full list of his titles. Omar Pkhakadze was the king of sprint, subsequently the publication issued by the Georgian NOC has the same title. Presentation of the publication took place at the gathering of the Ministry of Education, Sport and Culture of the Ajara region on the occasion of the legendary cycler's anniversary date.

The meeting was attended by Georgian NOC President Leri Khabelov, Chairman of the Ajara Supreme Council A. Beridze, Chair of the Ajara NOC regional branch J.Tsivadze, President, National Cycling Federation Omar Pkhakadze Junior, his colleague from Armenia A. Berezovski, Olympic champion V. Blagidze, the famous gymnast R. Sikharulidze and others.

"O.Pkhakadze was the great athlete and at the same time a person of an exceptional personal qualities. I remember when he became the world champion instead of getting his prize in the form of a new vehicle and apartment he requested construction of the cycling track in Tbilisi. Cycling was actually his whole life. People do not become the world champions with no reason, neither Olympic prize becomes easily available. Omar created the history of Georgian sport"- says NOC President.
