Sport Season Opens in Innsbruck

Winter Youth Olympic Games opens the sport season of 2012 on January 13-22 in Innsbruck, Austria. International Olympic Committee arrived at the decision to establish Summer and Winter Youth Olympic Games at its 119th session in 2007 in Guatemala. ‘This is a historic decision. It will promote a very important sporting event and enhance closer relations and friendship between the young people of the world', declared the President of IOC Mr. Jacques Rogge. Previous Youth Olympic Summer Games took place in Singapore in 2010. It is noteworthy that Innsbruck hosted ‘adult' Winter Olympics in 1964 and 1976.

Olympic Village opened officially on January 8, in Innsbruck, where about 1700 young athletes from 70 countries are accommodated. The Village comprises 444 apartments and according to the organizers of the Innsbruck Youth Winter Olympics, it offers the best living conditions. ‘We are really proud of our Olympic Village. I can assure you that the athletes and official persons, residing here, will feel at home', Peter Bayer, person in charge of ‘Innsbruck-2012' said.

In Innsbruck athletes of 14-18 age category will compete in 16 sports events: biathlon, bobsledding, skeleton, curling, ice hockey, toboggan, figure skating, snowboard, speed skating, skiing, downhill skiing, ski jumping, short-track, freestyle and biathlon double.

Small Georgian delegation leaves for Innsbruck on January 11. Vice President of GEONOC Vakhtang Gegelia heads our delegation, while in the Olympic Village the member of GEONOC board of directors Giorgi Esakia will take care of Georgian mission. Georgian athletes Susana Gava and Nikoloz Kozanashvili will participate in downhill skiing under the tutorship of coach Vakhtang Tediashvili.
