GENOC was established on October 6, 1989 in Tbilisi at the Constituent Conference of the Georgian National Olympic Committee held at the Palace of Chess. Conference with the attending 377 delegates, unanimously accepted resolution on foundation of GNOC, approving its Statutes and declaration. Pursuant to the GNOC statutes National Olympic Committee of Georgia operates with the indefinite term. The mission of the Georgian NOC is to develop, promote and protect the Olympic movement and sport in Georgia in accordance with the Olympic Charter. GNOC is entitled with the special power to present the country at the Olympic Games and other competitions organized by the IOC. GNOC designates and leads Olympic delegations of Georgia.

Nona Gaprindashvili - was elected as first president of the Georgian NOC at the Constituent Conference in 1989. (1989-1996). Vice Presidents- Victor Saneev, Tengiz Gachechiladze and Paata Natsvlishvili, Secretary General- David Kintsurashvili.

On March 9, 1992 International Olympic Committee gave provisional and conditional recognition to Georgian NOC. At the IOC 99th Session organized in Monaco on September 23, 1993 the International Olympic Committee recognized GNOC as its plenipotentiary member. The same year GNOC obtained recognition from the EOC and ANOC. Based on mutual agreements GNOC has established co-operation with many other NOCs and organizations. Georgian NOC represents an umbrella organization for 12 regional organizations, Georgian Olympic Academy, Georgian Olympians` Association and Olympic museum.

Since 1996 till 2004 GNOC Session Jansug Bagrationi was elected as president, who performed his responsibilities during 2 consecutive terms. On December 17, 2004 Georgian NOC Session elected Badri Patarkatsishvili on the post of president.

Olympic Order of the Georgian National Olympic Committee was created in 2002, which is awarded to persons who made significant contribution to the development of Georgian sport and Olympic movement.

Elective-Reporting Session held on October 31, 2008 elected Mr. Gia Natsvlishvili to the position of President of the Georgian National Olympic Committee.Gia Natsvlishili former governor of the eastern region of Kakheti, former MP and Vice President of Georgian Judo Federation collected 94 votes against 28.
