Olympic Day in Tbilisi and Georgia

18 June 2014

23 June marks the Olympic Day - an important day in the history of the modern Olympic Games. On 23 June 1894, Baron Pierre de Coubertin, a French pedagogue who was convinced of sport's moral and educational value, began the task of reviving the Olympic Games. He set up a committee in charge of organizing the first Games and created an international Olympic Movement. Hence, the first Games of the modern era were staged in Athens in 1896 and the International Olympic Committee was officially created. Back then nobody could have imagined how big the Olympic Movement would become.

Olympic Day, held annually, is celebrated by thousands of people worldwide commemorating the birth of the modern Olympic Games. Olympic Day is not only a celebration, but an international effort to promote fitness and well-being in addition to Olympic ideals of fair play, perseverance, respect, and sportsmanship.

The Olympic Day and events dedicated to this important date has been organized under the IOC patronage in Georgia since 1993 when Georgian NOC was granted official recognition by the International Olympic Committee.

On June 22 our Olympic Committee plans a wide scale celebration of this significant date not only in the capital Tbilisi but in other regions as well across the country. The Olympic Day celebration envisages diverse activities with active involvement of all age categories and persons with disabilities. The Olympic Run will take start from Tbilisi Concert Hall and end at the Bridge of Peace.

Olympic champions, representatives of the government and diplomatic missions operating in Georgia, well known statesmen of culture and sport, the volunteers and famous athletes will take active part in the Olympic Run and other events dedicated to this date. All the participants will be distributed special T-shirts, caps and the IOC Certificates. The winners will be presented the commemorative gifts.

Like last year General Sponsor of the Olympic Day 2014 is the Company "Samsung".
