Georgian NOC celebrated International Day of Sport for Development and Peace

Subject to the Resolution of the United Nations 67/296 of 23 August 2013 as well as the Resolution adopted by the UN General Assembly on 31 October 2014 in which it proclaimed 6 April the International Day of Sport for Development and Peace, Georgian NOC actively joined the initiative and in order to emphasize importance of sport as a means to promote education, health, development and peace organized special event at its headquarters. Celebration of the Day of Sport for Development and Peace on 6th April had a historic and symbolic meaning as the same day in 1896 in Athens officially opening first Olympic Games of the modern era.
Georgian NOC commemorated this important day organizing on this occasion exhibition of sport literature published by the NOC since its establishment. NOC museum hosted visitors to get them familier with the Olympic video program ‘Georgian Olympic champions' and specifically the film made on young Olympic champion in judo from 2012 London O.G.Lasha Shavdatuashvili (judo). The peak of the International Day celebration became 34th volume of the series of books published by NOC within the significant project ‘Story of a Champion'.
UNDP Deputy Resident Coordinator Shomby Sharp attended the Internation Day celebration at the Georgian NOC headquarters. Active and future Olympians, various NF leaders as well as mass media sources attended the event at the NOC.
Presdient L Khabelov highlighted in his welcome speech great importance of the Internation Day. This celebration coincided with birthdays of O.G prize winners Maia Azarashvili (Athletics) and Vakhtang Iagorashvili (Modern Pentathlon), so the President presented them with the special NOC 5 volume publication ‘Five Rings' issued within the Olympic Legacy project with the support of the Olympic Solidarity. This unique gift was presented also to the London O. G Champion Lasha Shavdatuashvili.
The International Day of Sport for Development and Peace was organized on 6th April in a warm and friendly environment which reaffirmed that sport can be a significant tool for youth education, friendship and peaceful development in strive for reinforcement of Olympic ideals.
