The Istanbul Championship Was Summed Up at GEONOC

23 September 2011

Today, the newly opened office of Georgian National Olympic Committee hosted the press conference devoted to the summing-up of of recent World Wrestling Championship in Istanbul. The press conference, which was chaired by the President of GEONOC Gia Natsvlishvili, was attended by the President of Wrestling Federation Kakha Getsadze, Chief Coach of free-style wrestling Zaza Turmanidze, Vice President of GEONOC Davit Gobejishvili, other officials of Wrestling Federation and Georgian athletes, who showed good results on the mat of Istanbul wrestling competition.

Gia Natsvlishvili congratulated Georgian athletes with the success at the Championship. He expressed hope that they would boost their efforts at the licensing tournaments in Bulgaria, China and Finland and they would get licenses for 7 weight categories in Greco-Roman and for 7 Wight categories in Free Style wrestling at the London Olympics. Let me remind you that we had 5 athletes in each style at the Beijing Olympic Games.

According to the GEONOC tradition, at the end of the press conference, the World Championship prize winners/London Olympics licensees Manuchar Tskhadaia (Greco-Roman style), Davit Khinchegashvili (Free style) and Malkhaz Zarkua (Free style), who didn't gain any medal but earned the license for the London Games, left their signatures on the board of ‘London-2012' licensees. As a matter of fact, Free Style wrestlers Davit Modzmamashvili and Davit Marsagishvili, who were unable to attend the press conference, have won Bronze Medals and London licenses as well.

Hereby, as of now, Georgian wrestlers have 7 official Olympic licenses but hopefully, their number will increase in the near future.
