Sports and Olympism: Innovation from Imereti Region Aimed at Making Champions Familiar to Children
24 October 2011
Imereti regional organization of Georgian National Olympic Committee, together with the sport schools of Kutaisi, has launched the project ‘Sport and Olympism'. The project aims at promoting Olympic ideas and unanimity of sports, art and culture. On October 14, in the Fencing School of Kutaisi, about 80 young fencers and their coaches convened to attend the specialized lectures.
The young people admired the lecture on Olympism, delivered by Revaz Robakidze, member of Georgian National Olympic Committee, Chairman of Imeretian Regional Organization of GEONOC. Besides, the young athletes learned the facts from the history of Olympic Games since antiquity till modern times. They participated in the quiz ‘Who Is the Best at the History of Olympic Games?'
Revaz Robakidze: ‘Our goal is to engage the students of sport schools in sports education in addition to the sport trainings. I was disappointed when the survey, in which about 100 students have participated, showed that some of them could not name the Olympic Champion from Kutaisi. That's when this idea was born. I am glad that our innovation aroused interest among the young athletes. We plan to organize the next lecture at the Boxing School of Kutaisi. Stage by stage, we will engage all sport schools of Kutaisi. The students will also take part in the painting contest titled 'We Are Future Olympians'. Another project - philatelist exhibition ‘Stamp Collection and Sport' - will be dedicated to the London Olympic Games. The crown of the events will be a film made about the Olympic Games, which will be sponsored by Kutaisi sports officials. When the film is completed, the copies will be distributed among all sport school of Kutaisi.
