Three Olympic Licenses Retained
14 November 2011
Six Georgian athletes participated in the World Licensing Weight Lifting Championship in Paris. Among them the best was Gia Machavariani (105kg), silver medalist of this year's European Championship. He lifted 187kg in a clean and jerk, winning minor Bronze Medal and snatched 222kg. In snatch and clean and jerk combination he accumulated 409kg, winning the 4th place.
Other Georgian weight lifters did not show any particular performance: Giorgi Lomtadze (69kg) did not get any place at all; Raul Tsirekidze (85kg) won the 16th place; Lasha Talakhadze (heavy weight), who was competing in group ‘B', also failed. Irakli Turmanidze (heavy weight) , failed in group ‘B'. Davit Gogia (105kg) accumulated 376kg and got the 17th place. However, for Georgian athletes the Paris Championship had different importance: they had to retain the points and 3 licenses, which they had earned at the last year's World Championship. They achieved their goal and secured 3 licenses for ‘London-2011'. Consequently, Georgian athletes have 10 Olympic licenses at their disposal today, though, hopefully, the number of their Olympic licenses will grow.
