Silver and bronze during the second last day of the Olympics
11 August 2012
Silver medal went to David Modzmanashvili in a free-style wrestling in the heavy weigh finals. The Georgian wrestler reached the final lossless. He defeated representatives from Mexico, Kazakhstan and Russia, and faced a very strong and titled opponent from Uzbekistan Artur Taymazov.
Both wrestlers were quite careful during the first match and the first two minutes ended with the score 0:0. Modzmanashvili was lucky in tiebreaker and received the right to grab onto his opponent's leg, but could not make it and the Uzbek wrestler won the match.
Modzmanashvili became active during the second period; however Taymazov managed to kick him out of the mat and gained one point which made him a consecutive three-time Olympic champion.
David Marsagishvili, a 84 kg category wrestler, won a bronze medal. 21-year old Georgian sportsman was noticeable with his spectacular wrestling during the London Olympics and undertook a great variety of holds in all four wrestles, but in the fourth finals he relaxed and lost against Puerto Rican Jaime Espinal.
Fortunately, the well known Puerto Rican defeated Soslan Gatsiev in semi finals and qualified into the finals, thus opening Marsagishvili the path towards the bronze medal. Marsagishvili did not lose this chance and took the lead over the Nigerian opponent without any trouble first and then easily defeated Gatsiev in the finals with the score 3:0, 3:1.
