Vladimir Khinchegashvili won the silver medal
10 August 2012
Due to biased refereeing the final match was finished earlier for Vladimir Khinchegashvili. During his gold medal wrestle against Djamal Otarsultanov from Russia the Georgian wrestler performed an obviously winning throw of his opponent in the final seconds of the match, but the referees gave a score to the Russian wrestler.
He lost the first set to Otarsultanov with a minimum difference: after a pointless two minutes the lot fell to the Russian wrestler to grab the opponent's leg and the latter made the point.
The second round turned out dramatic and full of action. The Russian took the lead 1:0 first, but Khinchegashvili tied the score and made the hold which was scored equally and the final result became 2:2.
Afterwards Kinchegashvili took the lead with 3:2 but made a mistake and allowed the Russian wrestler to kick him out of the mat, thus equalizing the score third time - 3:3.
Since the last hold was made by Otarsultanov he was the one who was going to win the set and the match if the score were even. However, Kinchegashvili allowed 12 second to prepare the last hold and before the two-minute period was over he made an obvious throw which was easily visible for everyone.
Referees were not going to give him a score and the Georgians advanced their objection. Following a short consideration the referees remained the score 3:3 unchanged, but after a repeated consultations they gave one point to the Russian wrestler.
Had Khinchegashvili been given the point he would have won the set, tied the score and would have competed for the win in the third round, but he got a silver medal only.
It was a second obvious case during the London Olympics when Georgian wrestler was not scored by referees. Several days earlier the hold of Greco-roman wrestler Vladimir Gegeshidze was not scored during his wrestle against Kazakh opponent.
It was the fourth Olympic medal for Georgia. Lasha Shavdatuashvili became Olympic champion in 66 kg weight category. Revaz Lashkhi won silver medal in Greco-roman 60 kg weight category and Manuchar Tskhadaia was the winner of a bronze medal in 66 kg Greco-roman wrestling category.
