Revaz Lashkhi’s London silver and the taken-away bronze
06 August 2012
In the final of Greco-roman 60 kg Revaz Lashkhi lost against Omid Haji Noroozi from Iran and took the silver.
The first minute and a half of the first set between the Georgian and the Iranian went scoreless and Lashkhi was given the opportunity to attack from parterre; however he could not overcome the opponent and lost the round. In the second round the Iranian performed only a one-point hold and actively defended himself during the whole minute, thus winning the round and the entire final wrestle.
Nevertheless, Revaz Lashkhi brought a second medal to the Georgian delegation at the London Olympic Games. He overcame very strong opponents on his way to the final - Sayed Abdelmonem Hamed from Egypt, Zaur Kuramagomedov from Russia and Hasan Aliyev from Azerbaijan.
In the 84 kg weight category Vladimer Gegeshidze was virtually deprived of bronze in the bronze medal final wrestle.
Gegeshidze managed to defend himself in the third decisive set against Daniel Gajiev from Kazakhstan. The opponent lifted him but fell on his back and Gegeshidze took 2 points, however Kazakhs protested against the decision. As a result the Georgian sportsman was deprived of the scores and the point was given to the Kazakh wrestler that was followed by the protest from the Georgian side. The referees did not change their mind and the bronze medal went to the representative of Kazakhstan.
The preceding two sets completed without action and tired wrestlers were not able to make any hold neither from standing position nor from parterre.
Gegeshidze had defeated Saman Tahmasebi, Vasil Machiba from Ukrain and lost against Alan Kurgaev from Russia. The outcome of the bronze medal final fight between him and his opponent from Kazakhstan was pretty much decided by the referees' unsteadiness.
