Lasha Shavdatuashvili is the Olympic Champion

The first gold medal of Georgia at the 2012 London Olympic Games. 20-year old Georgian judoka Lasha Shavdatuashvili is the Olympic champion. In the 66 kg category final match Georgian judoka defeated 31-year old Hungarian Miklos Ungvari by Yuko.

Shavdatuashvili was active in the final. He gained Yuko first and then made his opponent to get warned, and notched a confident and disserved victory though not by ippon.

"I am not able to pass my feelings. I am extremely happy. I would like to thank everyone who was supporting me" - said Lasha Shavdatuashvili to the reporter of the Prime Time News after the final match.

It is worth mentioning that a 20-year old Georgian judoka had won all the four matches by ippon before reaching the final. Lasha Shavdatuashvili defeated Alejandro Zuniga in 39 seconds in 1/16th of finals, French David Larose in the eighth-finals, Colin Oates from the hosting country in the quarter finals and Masashi Ebinuma the world champion from Japan in semi finals. During the next five days five more judokas will get into the tatami of London.
