18 March 2013

On the occasion of the European Wrestling Championships 2013 to be organized in Tbilisi during 19-24 March, FILA Acting President Nenad Lalovic from Serbia and President of the European Wrestling Association Tseno Tsenov from Bulgaria paid a visit to Tbilisi. On 18th March a day prior to the Continental Championship honorary guests from Europe met Vice President of the Georgian Wrestling Federation Edisher Machaidze, GNOC President Leri Khabelov and First Vice President Elguja Berishvili discussing at the GNOC headquarters recent problems facing this sports.

"Wrestling has rich traditions in your country and it's natural that Tbilisi hosts European Championships. This is your first championships and I hope it will not be last, I am sure you will cope worthily with this great mission. As for the current problems facing wrestling I think this issue will be solved positively. Recent meeting with the IOC President Dr. Jacques Rogge was rather important. Regretfully, due to lack of progress in this sport created problems and raised the issue of removing wrestling from the program of the summer Olympics. On 29th May presentations will be made in St. Petersburg covering all sports to be included in the program of 2020 Olympic Games, while final decision will be made in September in Buenos Aires at the IOC session. We are getting ready for both important events and hope the issue will be solved positively for wrestling"- says Nenad Lalovic.

NOC President Leri Khabelov considers that the wrestling society will succeed in assuring the IOC to maintain this sport within the Program of the Games. " I am sure FILA new president will not repeat mistakes of its predecessor that placed the future of wrestling in danger. Reforms are necessary, it is evident and I believe everything will be changed to the better. I told Nenad Lalovic that we will support them as much as we can in their efforts to save this sport. I do not think Olympic Games will be left without wrestling"- says Leri Khabelov. On May 20 in Moscow takes place FILA Congress where new President of FILA will be elected.
