2014 Cadet European Championships-Qualification for YOG
2014 Cadet European Championships takes place in Bulgaria, the city of Samokovo where Georgia obtained one more qualification for the YOG. At the continental championships quotas for Nanjing 2014 are gained by finalists. The quotas are limited with only two qualifications allocated per country in each freestyle and Greco Roman wrestling. Even in the cases when the country has over two competitors (for instance Azerbaijan, 4 qualifications) the final selection of the strongest two wrestlers will be made by the coaching board.
Regretfully, the events in Samokovo have not evolved in our favor and freestyle wrestlers failed to succeed. Meki Simonia (76kg) was the only wrestler who got qualified for the YOG 2014 to be held in China. The Georgian defeated his German, Hungarian and Azerbaijani opponents in a row at the beginning acquiring in the final fight licence for Nanjing YOG. We were very close to the second quota place, however Givi Macharashvili (100kg) lost the chance just 20 sec. before the end of the match. Macharashvili initially fought convincingly against his opponent from Moldova to get into the final, but by losing momentary concentration, he lost both the chance of getting into the final and qualifying for the YOG. Georgian athletes in Greco-Roman style will start competition on 10-11th May.
